  • Caregiving Roles

Gender disparities in caregiving roles significantly impact society, as highlights. Women predominantly shoulder the responsibility of caregiving, with 82% of solo parent households led by single mothers and 61% of caregivers for the elderly being women 1. This reliance on women for caregiving is not only inequitable but also fragile, as demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated educational setbacks and increased the gender gap in employment 1.

When we discuss labor, we almost exclusively talk about paid labor, the work we do for money. But there is an enormous critical swath of labor this view overlooks, and its important caring for one another, raising our kids, administering to the sick, and caring for the aging.

The traditional informal caregiving system is no longer viable in today's society, necessitating government support to ensure fair and sustainable caregiving practices 1.

    Family Leave

The lack of paid family leave in the US places it among only six countries worldwide without this essential benefit, a situation criticizes as "bad company" 2. He argues that providing paid family leave and other supportive measures like the child tax credit can significantly reduce child poverty and hunger, as evidenced during the pandemic 2.

The US is one of only six countries that doesn't offer paid family leave. The others Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New guinea and Tonga. This is bad company.

Galloway advocates for flexible work arrangements to support caregivers, emphasizing that such policies would benefit society by keeping more people in the workforce and addressing broader social issues like loneliness and class warfare 2.
